HISTORY
The original one and a half storey side gable brick cottage on Chilton was owned by Hanaiah Campbell, a carpenter born in 1844. It was partially demolished and rebuilt in the late 1870’s. There’s a good chance Campbell himself was involved in building the original house as vernacular architecture, by definition, traditionally did not use formally-schooled architects, but relied on the design skills and tradition of local builders.

The rebuild signified a boost in wealth where the original design evolved to a more formal and polite architecture, with stylistic elements of design intentionally incorporated for aesthetic purposes beyond the building's functional requirements.


These features still shine today and range from handsome exterior shutters to the lead glass fanlight and door connecting the vestibule to the main living space. They also include an elegant arched built-in bookcase, original brass door hardware and an ornately carved marble fireplace mantel with an equally ornate iron firebox -- both adorned with fruit, flowers and vines. The later, truly a work of art, is unlike any fireplace you have ever seen on your Hamilton house hunts before!



An aesthetically pleasing but functional historical addition was the alteration of the roof line to include a large formal dormer facing onto Chilton Place. This dramatically increased space and light, boosting the original 1.5 storey home to 2 full storeys.

In terms of more current improvements, the recently re-stuccoed home has undergone over $250,000 in upgrades.
